BATAM, VISTORBELITUNG.COM,- Heavy and continuous rainfall has once again caused significant flooding in Batam City, with the intersection near Kepri Mall reported to be the most severely affected area. As of Monday evening (May 5, 2025), the major thoroughfare is largely impassable for smaller vehicles, causing significant traffic congestion and disrupting the daily activities of residents.
Eyewitness accounts and circulating social media footage depict scenes of cars and motorcycles struggling to navigate the floodwaters, some even appearing to stall in the rising currents. The water level at the Kepri Mall intersection is estimated to be at least knee-high for an average adult, making it a dangerous passage.
"The flooding started after several hours of heavy rain this afternoon," said Rina, a commuter who was caught in the traffic jam. "When I reached the Kepri Mall area, the water was already quite high. Many cars were turning back, and those who tried to go through were moving very slowly."
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the extent of the damage and any potential casualties. However, emergency services are reportedly on the ground, attempting to manage the traffic flow and assist stranded motorists.
This is not the first time Batam has experienced significant flooding due to heavy rainfall, raising concerns about the city's drainage infrastructure and its capacity to handle extreme weather events. Residents are urging the local government to take more proactive measures to mitigate the impact of future floods.
"We hope the government can find a long-term solution to this recurring problem," added Rina. "Every time it rains heavily, this area always gets flooded. It really disrupts our lives and businesses."
Motorists are advised to avoid the Kepri Mall intersection and seek alternative routes until the floodwaters recede. Further updates on the situation will be provided as more information becomes available.
