VISTORBELITUNG.COM,Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that the mass production of the Oreshnik missile system has begun, with the first batch of missiles already delivered to the military. This marks a significant upgrade in Russia's military capabilities.
Putin made the statement during a meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, where the two reaffirmed plans to deploy the Oreshnik missile system in Belarus by the end of the year.
The Oreshnik missile is a medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile, reportedly capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 10. Its development is linked to the collapse of arms control treaties, including the INF and New START agreements. Putin himself has claimed that the missile is so powerful that its mass use, even with a conventional warhead, could have an impact comparable to a nuclear weapon.
The Oreshnik missile was first used in November 2024, when Russia deployed it to strike an industrial facility in the city of Dnipro, Ukraine. Putin stated the attack was a response to Ukraine's use of Western-made long-range missiles to strike Russian territory.
With the start of mass production and the delivery of the first batch, Russia appears to be accelerating its military modernization. This move is seen as an effort to boost its combat capabilities and assert its military strength on the global stage. Analysts also note the possibility of deploying these missiles in various regions, including the Asia-Pacific, in the future.
The increased production of the Oreshnik missile adds to a long list of Russian military modernizations, which includes the Yars missile system, the Tu-160M strategic bomber, and new submarines and surface ships.
