VISTORBELITUNG.COM,Muscat, Oman 2016 High-level talks between representatives of Iran and the United States took place in Muscat today. The dialogue, described as "very serious" was facilitated by an Omani mediator, reflecting ongoing efforts to reduce tensions and find common ground between the two countries that have been at odds for a long time.

A source close to the talks said that the meeting focused on presenting and clarifying both sides" positions and thoughts. The aim is to better understand each other's priorities and interests, while mapping out areas where potential diplomatic progress might be achieved. While not disclosed in detail, critical issues such as Iran's nuclear program, US economic sanctions and regional stability are expected to be part of the agenda.

The parties involved assessed the meeting as a constructive and useful step. A joint statement or a source familiar with the course of diplomacy said, "The meeting was useful to clarify both Iranian and American thinking and identify areas for possible progress".

Signaling that this process is not final, the parties agreed to continue dialogue. We aim to hold another meeting in due course, with the results (of talks in Muscat) being carefully considered in Tehran and Washington", it added. This statement suggests that what is being discussed in Oman needs to be further evaluated by decision makers in the two capitals before any further steps are taken.

Oman, with its neutral foreign policy and long history as a peaceful mediator in the region, is again playing a key role in providing a discrete channel for dialogue. Muscat's efforts are part of a series of indirect and direct contacts between Iran and the US, which fluctuate in intensity as political dynamics and nuclear issues evolve
