VISTORBELITUNG.COM,TANJUNG PANDAN, BANGKA BELITUNG - A new innovation in China's aerospace industry, the Jiutian SS-UAV (Solar-Powered Super-High Altitude Ultra-Long Endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), is reportedly set to conduct its maiden flight in June 2025. This solar-powered drone previously captured public attention when it was exhibited at the vibrant 2024 Zhuhai Airshow.
The Jiutian SS-UAV is designed to be capable of flying in the stratosphere for a very long time, potentially reaching months without stopping. This capability is supported by advanced solar panel technology integrated into its wings, allowing the aircraft to generate energy independently during daytime flights. The generated energy is then stored in high-capacity batteries to enable operations at night.
The main advantage of the SS-UAV lies in its ability to perform various missions without requiring landing for a significant period. This opens up wide-ranging application opportunities, from environmental and disaster monitoring, border and maritime surveillance, to providing communication and internet services in remote areas.
At the 2024 Zhuhai Airshow, the Jiutian SS-UAV prototype showcased an impressive wide-wing design, necessary to accommodate a large number of solar panels. Lightweight composite materials also appeared to dominate the aircraft's structure, aiming to maximize energy efficiency and payload capacity. Although specific details regarding its payload and sensor capabilities have not been disclosed in detail, experts suspect that the aircraft will be equipped with the latest remote sensing and communication technologies.
The planned maiden flight in June 2025 marks a significant milestone in the development of SS-UAV technology in China.
