VISTORBELITUNG.COM,PYONGYANG, - Indonesia has just made a historic diplomatic move. The Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Sugiono, successfully concluded his official visit to Pyongyang, Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) or North Korea, on Saturday (October 11, 2025).
This visit marks a significant moment as it is the first by an Indonesian Foreign Minister to Pyongyang in the last 12 years. The visit was conducted at the direct invitation of his counterpart, the DPRK Foreign Minister, H.E. Choe Son Hui.
The main agenda for the visit was the bilateral meeting between Foreign Minister Sugiono and Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui. During the warm discussions, the two foreign ministers exchanged views on the long-standing friendship between Indonesia and the DPRK, which has spanned more than six decades since the 1960s.
The bilateral discussions focused on efforts to further enhance the 🇮🇩-🇰🇵 friendship in various fields. As a result, both sides reached a key agreement: to explore new and mutually beneficial areas of collaboration.
"We discussed various efforts to strengthen the Indonesia-DPRK friendship and cooperation in various fields," said Foreign Minister Sugiono in an official statement received by reporters.
Indonesia Acts as a Bridge between North Korea and ASEAN
In the spirit of constructive diplomacy, Foreign Minister Sugiono also conveyed Indonesia's strong commitment. He reaffirmed Indonesia's readiness to facilitate closer engagement between the DPRK and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
This includes efforts to enhance North Korea's participation in ASEAN-led mechanisms, such as the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). This commitment demonstrates Indonesia's active role in fostering dialogue and cooperation in the region.
Renewal of Bilateral Consultation MoU Becomes the Foundation
To solidify the commitment to strengthen bilateral relations, the meeting concluded with the signing of an important document. The two Foreign Ministers signed the Renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Establishment of Bilateral Consultations.
This MoU will serve as the official platform to regularly discuss and explore potential cooperation across a wide range of sectors.
The scope of collaboration targeted includes political, socio-cultural, technical, and sports fields. This signing simultaneously reaffirms the enduring friendship and mutual commitment of the two nations to continue deepening their more than six-decade-long bilateral relationship.
"The renewal of this MoU reaffirms the long-standing friendship and the commitment of the two countries to continue deepening bilateral relations," stated the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Prior to this official meeting, Foreign Minister Sugiono also accepted the DPRK Government's invitation to attend the commemorative event for the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea on the previous evening. This historic official visit underscores Indonesia's continued commitment to fostering constructive engagement and cooperation with North Korea.
